Combe Bank School was established in 1924 as part of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus' foundation of schools. The Society had been started by Cornelia Connelly, once described as 'one of the C19th most tragic and heroic figures'. An American convert to Catholicism, Cornelia later felt bound to leave her husband and abandon her children for her faith as she drew together a new order to create a form of religious life and education in tune with the young country in which she had grown up.
Cornelia's principles of education still influence the school today although Combe Bank is now ecumenical in outlook accepting students of all faiths or none. Nevertheless, Religious Education remains at the centre of the school's life with a beautiful chapel at the heart of the school.
Mass and Holy Communion are regularly celebrated in the chapel and Harvest celebrations and Carol services are also important parts of the school year. All girls study Religious Education to GCSE and it remains one of our most popular A level subjects.
Our code of behavior is in tune with the Christian tenet that we should 'treat others as we wish to be treated'.
